A lista de indicados à 78ª edição do Tony Awards, considerado o Oscar do teatro americano, foi anunciada nesta quinta-feira (1º) pelos vencedores do prêmio, a atriz Sarah Paulson e o ator Wendell Pierce. Os principais destaques foram o musical A Morte lhe Cai Bem, inspirado no filme de 1992, Buena Vista Social Club, que retrata a trajetória de músicos cubanos, e Maybe Happy Ending, que fala sobre dois robôs apaixonados. Cada produção recebeu o total de dez indicações.
Audra McDonald, estrela do musical Gypsy, fez história ao conquistar sua 11ª indicação na premiação, se tornando, assim, a artista mais indicada na história de Tony Awards. Além dela, Nicole Scherzinger, que vive Norma Desmond em Sunset Blvd, as estrelas de A Morte lhe Cai Bem, Megan Hilty e Jennifer Simard, e Jasmine Amy Rogers, protagonista de Boop! O Musical, também foram indicadas na categoria melhor atriz.
Entre os indicados também estão nomes bem conhecidos de Hollywood. O ator George Clooney recebeu sua primeira indicação ao estrear na Broadway com a adaptação de Boa Noite e Boa Sorte. Sadie Sink, de Stranger Things, foi indicada por John Proctor Is the Villain e Bob Odenkirk por Glengarry Glen Ross. Já Sarah Snook, que venceu o Emmy pela temporada final de Succession, foi indicada por sua atuação em O Retrato de Dorian Gray.
